I’m sure it won’t surprise you at all to know that one of the top 5 ways that Makers actually turn their passion into a profession is through teaching others. I discussed it a lot in the previous section of The Maker’s Guide to Making Money so there is no need to re-hash it. Teaching was not only fulfilling for our business, but it was also lucrative. So before you toss aside the idea that you wouldn’t be a great teacher because of X, Y & Z reasons – let me tell the top 3 reasons why YOU should teach:
- Not Being a Perfectly Polished, Professional Educator Makes Students More Comfortable! In my experience, the more authentic & less polished teachers often times make THE BEST teachers. Students not only relax in their presence, they feel more comfortable making mistakes and taking chances. Yes, you will have a student here or there that expects you to have credentials a mile long – but they are few and far between. Most students want a teacher they can relate to, one that makes them feel comfortable and one that doesn’t speak over their head.
- You Already Know Way More Than You Realize! Usually a student is coming to you because they know nothing about the craft, technique or project you’re teaching. If it’s something you’ve been working on in the privacy of your own home, it’s likely that with a well thought out plan, you could teach it and look like a pro! The expectations we put on ourselves is always so much higher than what others place on us and I can assure you that your knowledge is far greater than you realize. Honestly, it’s so much more about preparation and organization, when teaching, than it is about being an expert.
- It’s as much about Fun & Community as it is about learning! Yes, people come to you to learn but the truth of the matter is they’re looking for entertainment and friendship too. If you create an atmosphere of community, give time for students to connect with one another AND teach them a new skill – you’ll have students for life.
